Malcolm Hamilton Nightingale Gruner (22 August 1905 – 28 August 1989) was an English-born Canadian civil engineer who spent most of his adult life in Montreal, Quebec.

Born in Yorkshire, England, Malcolm was the son of Oskar Cameron Gruner and Alice Patricia Charlton Nightingale. He grew up in England, trained as an engineer, and immigrated to Canada in 1926.

He married Jessie Rosalie Mullally in Montreal on 10 September 1930. Together they had seven children: Michael, Peter, Christopher, Anthony, Nicholas, Cecilia, and Jennifer.

Malcolm worked as a civil engineer and was active in Montreal's Roman Catholic community. Family accounts also describe him as musical and deeply interested in archaeology and Egyptology.

Malcolm was born on 22 August 1905 in Yorkshire, England and baptised on 15 November 1905 at St Mark, Woodhouse, Yorkshire.

He was the son of physician and medical researcher Oskar Cameron Gruner and Alice Patricia Charlton Nightingale.

In the 1921 census, Malcolm was living with his family in Leeds. He was unmarried and recorded as a scholar.

Family accounts state that Malcolm attended Leeds Grammar School and later trained as an engineer.

Malcolm arrived in Montreal on 17 October 1926. Immigration records identify him as a civil engineer.

Family accounts state that he came to Montreal to work for Vickers. His father Oskar had previously worked in Montreal and had professional connections within the city's medical community, including the Mullally family.

Malcolm's first period in Canada appears to have been relatively brief. He returned to England in 1927, arriving in Liverpool on 20 April 1927.

By 1929, Malcolm was living in Hampstead, England. He departed England again on 24 October 1929, returning to Canada before his marriage the following year.

During Malcolm's return to England, his relationship with Jessie Rosalie Mullally developed across the Atlantic.

Family accounts state that Jessie travelled to England in 1928 with members of her family and that she and Malcolm became engaged during this visit.

Malcolm and Jessie married on 10 September 1930 at St. Patrick's in Montreal, Quebec.

Malcolm and Jessie raised seven children in Montreal:

By the 1931 Canadian census, Malcolm and Jessie were living in the Montreal area. Malcolm was recorded as married, Roman Catholic, head of household, and employed as a civil engineer.[7]

The family later lived in the Town of Mount Royal, including a home on Caledonia Road.

Family recollections describe the household as one in which education, religion, music, and professional achievement were strongly emphasized. Their children later entered fields including medicine, engineering, social work, finance, and the Roman Catholic priesthood.

Malcolm worked as a civil engineer throughout much of his adult life.

His occupation is documented in his immigration records and in the 1931 Canadian census. Later records also continued to identify him as an engineer.

Family accounts state that his original move to Canada in 1926 was connected with employment at Vickers.

Malcolm's complete employment history, including later employers and engineering projects, has not yet been reconstructed.

Malcolm was recorded as Roman Catholic in the 1931 Canadian census.

Family accounts state that he converted to Catholicism as a young man. The story of his conversion is associated with a visit to Rome and with the Church of St Cecilia in Trastevere.

Later in Montreal, Malcolm became active in Annunciation of Our Lady Parish. Family recollections describe him as one of a small group involved in petitioning for the establishment of the parish and state that he later served for many years as a parish warden.

Family accounts describe Malcolm as having a strong interest in archaeology and Egyptology, particularly discoveries being made in Egypt during his youth.

He was also musical. His son Nicholas later recalled Malcolm playing Chopin and other classical music at home in the evenings.

These details are preserved primarily through family recollection rather than contemporary official records.

Malcolm remained associated with the Montreal area for much of his adult life.

Later records place him in the Town of Mount Royal and elsewhere in Montreal during the twentieth century.

He died on 28 August 1989 in Oakville, Ontario, six days after his 84th birthday.

His wife Jessie survived him and died in Montreal on 23 March 1994.
